Whistle happy referees

For the next few posts I’m going to be looking at referees. As I said last time a total of 52 referees have officiated games since the beginning of the 00-01 season. I’m only going to look at those referees that have been involved in 76+ games as that should be a large enough sample to minimise the effects of individual games that may be particularly ‘unruly’ or ‘clean’ in nature – in total this leaves 23 referees.

Firstly I’m going to look at the referees that award the largest and smallest number of fouls per game. (The average here is 25.06 with a standard deviation of 1.87)

Referee Total fouls per game Referee Total fouls per game
M Riley 28.86 P Walton 21.69
G Barber 28.65 R Styles 22.62
G Poll 27.56 M Halsey 23.04
U Rennie 27.47 M Clattenburg 23.46
P Dowd 27.08 C Foy 23.53

How about giving fouls against the home team? (Average 12.24, standard deviation 0.96)

Referee Home fouls per game Referee Home fouls per game
M Riley 14.26 P Walton 10.51
U Rennie 13.94 R Styles 10.88
G Barber 13.64 M Halsey 11.14
G Poll 13.48 C Foy 11.47
P Dowd 13.00 M Clattenburg 11.56

And then fouls against the away team? (Average 12.82, standard deviation 0.96)

Referee Away fouls per game Referee Away fouls per game
G Barber 15.01 P Walton 11.18
M Riley 14.60 R Styles 11.74
G Poll 14.08 M Clattenburg 11.90
P Dowd 14.08 M Halsey 11.91
U Rennie 13.53 M Dean 12.00

Naturally the referees that appear in the first table are likely to also appear in the bottom two however they don’t all appear in the same order which will become a point of interest later on.
